Latest Updates from Our Project:

Say hello to Flik, a new in-game feature (miaow).
almost 5 years ago – Sun, Nov 24, 2019 at 12:49:59 AM

Dear Backers,

Did you know we have one member of the team who is not quite human? She is Flik, our visiting cat. To celebrate the end of the campaign, and to honour the calm and chaos she brings to the studio we're going to add her into the game as a rare event, try to spot her on your travels!

We took a little time out to make a video so you can get to know her a little better!

Thank you for all that you are doing!

38 HOURS LEFT!

Best Wishes,

Helen and the team at Might & Delight

5,000 backers and $200k! Now TWO new stretch goals: a portal and a travel journal!
almost 5 years ago – Sat, Nov 23, 2019 at 12:40:30 AM

Dear Backers,

TWO days left and we've TWO new stretch goals for you!

A portal to Travellers’ Meadow

Travellers' Meadow is a sweep of land at the water’s edge where the sky is aglow with Night Flowers. There'll be exactly as many Night Flowers as backers of this short campaign, and they will be there forever! This is your special place in Braided Shore – a commemoration of this world-building adventure we've enjoyed together. With 6,000 backers we'll make a portal to take you to Travellers' Meadow whenever you wish. All players will be able to use the portal and you’ll still need to gather the regeants to tie the required knot, but once the portal is open, all the non-backers in your group can step through too!

Travel Journal

From the moment the trailer was released in September we’ve heard your yearnings for a book in which to write your tales. We love that idea too! What better way to collect your thoughts and document your exploration of Braided Shore? If we get 6,500 backers we’ll add a Book of Travels Journal to all pledge tiers Traveller and above. (We're really squeezing this one in, so we don't have an image to show you right now but we're sure you have an idea of what you can expect!)

Keep sharing – not long to go!

You might have guessed that our team is pretty small so we aren’t able to be as active and far reaching as we’d like to be, but with your help we just might make it, so If you can help us unlock our next stretch goal (or even smash it!) by sharing the campaign on any forums you’re active on, or on social media, we’ll be so grateful!

Thank you for reading, caring, backing and taking any part at all! We’ll be in touch with one last campaign treat very soon – so stay with us!

Best Wishes,

Helen and the team at Might & Delight

5 Days left – A free game for all Travellers and above!
about 5 years ago – Wed, Nov 20, 2019 at 01:44:22 AM

Dearest Backers,

With only FIVE days left, we can’t have asked for a better start to our final week. We’ve really come a long way! We’ve unlocked islands, dreams, music, accessories and added a new Map Book, and lots more.

We’ve met with more new Travellers than we ever expected and heard a lot of really useful feedback about Book of Travels, not to mention a wealth of new ideas to add to the game.

But while we’ve had the pleasure of the company of a fair few Might and Delight fans (hello!), most of us are newly acquainted, so we thought a great way to get to know each other better would be to add two of our landmark games into all rewards Settler and above – say hello to Tiny Echo and Meadow

MEADOW is free for all Travellers and above and TINY ECHO is free for all Settlers and above! So if you've been thinking of pledging up, now is the time! And we might get even closer to our $200,00 unlock for PETS.

Tiny Echo and Meadow: our road to Book of Travels

Tiny Echo came about after artists Emma and Marcus joined the studio in 2016. Until then, we simply didn’t have enough artists for the time-consuming job of making a 2D hand-drawn game world. With more 2D artists in the studio it became possible to build a large and detailed game world with hand-painted artwork, and so Book of Travels came to be.

This goes to show just how much the people that comprise the team – in terms of who we are and what we can do – have an impact on the decisions we take and the kinds of games we make.

Tiny Echo - now free for all Settlers and above

Our first networked game was Meadow, and it was our intention to keep it fairly small – mainly because we were on a learning curve and needed to know that we were going to be able to deliver! We didn’t expect Meadow to be doing so well after three years, but it’s still very popular and we continue to work on updates.

In many ways Meadow is quite a small game – it’s the players and fans who have made it the success it is, and the forums (and an unofficial Discord server) are still alive with chat, fan art and stories.

Meadow - now free for all Travellers and above

Another contribution that Meadow makes to Book of Travels is emotes. When it came to player-to-player communication we wanted to retain some of the purity of the animal experience and avoid adding conventional language - this is how we came to design the system of symbols that we call emotes.

As you probably know, Book of Travels will have its own emotes, allowing you to collect them and develop your communications skills as you play (see the section titled Wordless communication for richer roleplay on the project page for more info). Meadow is the game where we tested and developed this kind of in-game communication and the players were more positive about this than we could have imagined. And beyond the game experience, it seemed that in-game relationships built on wordless communication had unintentionally laid foundations for a creative, supportive and inclusive forum culture. We hope that when you play both Meadow and Book of Travels you’ll find that it's a language that enhances the magic of the gameplay experience.

Our initial idea was to launch a new tier for these games, but we decided we wanted to make them part of existing reward tiers so that more people can enjoy them and know a bit about the journey that our small studio is on. (As you can probably tell by now, we tend to do things quite organically!)

We hope that you enjoy delivering mail with Emi in Tiny Echo and that you run wild in Meadow! Of course we’ll send you the Steam key for these games soon after the campaign so you don’t have to wait till the release of Book of Travels to play! (And if you already own one or both, you can of course give your key to a friend.)

Thanks again for your attention, your support and your backing. For anyone who’s new to us, see our update index below for lots on the game along with Travellers' Meadow which is now looking brighter than ever!

Please don’t forget to share the campaign so we can hit our big $200,000 and unlock in-game pets!

Best Wishes,

From Helen and the team at Might & Delight

Island and Pin-Pebble-Pouch Unlocked + Four Knotspells: your magic is cast!
about 5 years ago – Tue, Nov 19, 2019 at 12:44:34 AM

Island + Pin-Pouch-Pebble unlocked

Not only did 4,500 backers get us the minigame Pin-Pouch_Pebble but we now have 100 islands – thank you! And we're so looking forward to task of choosing one even though it's going to be really really HARD. We haven’t planned when we'll get to do that just yet, but we’ll keep you posted. And don’t worry, if you still want to submit an island you have until midnight EST 18th November (but oh I am not the hardest on deadlines so try me!) Thank you for your beautiful work and for helping us with our world building! Check out all the entries so far by searching #BookofTravels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Your magic in four new knots

Today we want to let you know how your ideas are going to implemented into knotspells... you may remember that this was our first stretch goal over two weeks ago, and you had tons of amazing ideas.

Since there is a lot to be considered in any magical addition into a complex game, we weren’t sure we’d be able to do this so early on, but then we decided to do it anyway! So here are the knotspells you added and designed... Just to be clear, this is super early stages, so the details and names may change somewhat. And we’re sorry if we didn't get to mention everyone by name – there were a lot of great ideas that fell into similar categories as the ones you read below and we just couldn’t quite keep on top of them all.

Firework knotspell: a celebratory knot that sends up a little firework display when untied or maybe spouts confetti (Thank you Ashley Corkill)

Deception knotspell: this will make you able to disguise yourself as anybody else – though it requires you to tie a second knot to whoever you want to imitate (NPCs as well as players). This could be great to use to ambush others, or just confuse them! (Thank you Joseph J. Gericke)

Rapid bloom knotspell: a spell that creates new growth or helps plants grow. It can be used by Travellers to help revitalize land that’s been ravaged by fire damage or left to decay, and will help buds to flower and plants to bear fruit. Travellers may use it to grow a tree or plant to commemorate a journey together (Thank you Annie Chartier and MegaMalboro)

Familiar-summoning knotspell: a knotspell to summon a spirit familiar to you, the spirit familiar might depend on the kind of knot you tie. (Thank you Dennis, Savinien and Kaz Floyd)

That’s it for now, but since we're not done yet! This is the last week of the campaign, we've got some more exciting news to send soon, so stay tuned and keep sending the love and sharing - we're crashing through those stretch goals, let's keep it going! And to see what you might have missed, use our update index just here.

A Little Taste of Combat
about 5 years ago – Sat, Nov 16, 2019 at 02:07:55 AM

Hello Everyone,

Happy Friday! Today, we're pleased to finally give you some info on something many of you have been asking about... is there combat in the game? What is it like? Here's Lead programmer Jens Berglind to explain.

Jens Berglind, Lead Programmer

Combat in Book of Travels

Combat is not the protagonist of the Book of Travels, but it can be a larger or smaller part of the experience depending on a player's choices. When you're traversing more urbanised and populated areas, you'll be fairly safe from combat situations. But if you go further out into the wilderness to explore the wilder and less wandered corners of the world, threats start to become more common.

When in combat, you can choose to do weapon attacks, use certain abilities, or unleash certain knotspells. There are some combat-specific knotspells that do damage, but also plenty which you can use to aid your allies.

There are many types of opponent

The combat actions happen in real time, and every action has a countdown for the time it takes to execute. But be wary if you are in the heat of the battle - every hit you take will set back your current action counter as you attempt to block them or take the hit.

There is strength in numbers, which goes both for you and your allies, and the dangers you might face. Preparation, team work, and knowing your limits can be the key to your survival and success when wandering in the more dangerous parts of Braided Shore.

We're designing the game so that it won't be necessary that your character needs to seek out combat situations to progress in the game. But when it does happen, it should be dramatic, interesting, and have an impact.

Thanks for all your support! /Jens
